The river sparkled with ripples, and as the boat reached the middle of the river, he accidentally dropped a valuable sword he was carrying into the water. The sword made a "plop" sound as it sank and quickly disappeared from sight. Everyone on the boat felt sorry for him and exclaimed in surprise. However, the man from Chu remained calm and composed. He took out a small knife from his pocket and carved a mark on the side of the boat where the sword had fallen. Everyone was puzzled and asked, "What are you doing? The sword has already fallen into the water; what's the point of marking the boat?" The man confidently replied, "Don't worry, I have my own way. This mark indicates where the sword fell into the water. Once the boat reaches the shore, I just need to jump in from this mark and retrieve my sword." The boat continued to move forward, and the river water flowed endlessly. The man from Chu sat on the boat, gazing at the mark, feeling assured. Finally, the boat reached the shore. The man immediately stood up, took off his outer clothes, and jumped into the river according to the mark he had carved on the boat to look for his sword. He searched for a long time in the water but found nothing. By then, the river was still flowing rapidly, and the sword had long since drifted away with the current. The man climbed back onto the shore, looking very disappointed and confused: why couldn't he find the sword at the mark? Seeing his predicament, the people around him shook their heads and sighed. An old man stepped forward and said to him, "Child, the boat moves on the river, and once the sword fell into the water, it doesn't stay still with the boat but drifts with the current. The mark you made on the boat only indicates the position of the boat when the sword fell, not the actual location of the sword. How can you find the sword this way?" The man from Chu, upon hearing the old man's words, finally realized his folly and stubbornness, feeling deeply regretful.
从前，有一位楚国人，他要乘船过江办事。 江上波光粼粼，船行至江中央时，他一不小心，将随身携带的一把宝剑掉落江中。那宝剑 “扑通” 一声入水，瞬间没了踪影。同船的人都为他感到惋惜，纷纷惊呼。 可这位楚人却不慌不忙，只见他从衣袋里掏出一把小刀，在船舷上宝剑掉落的地方刻了一个记号。众人皆感疑惑，纷纷问道：“你这是做什么？剑已经掉进水里了，在船上刻记号有何用？” 楚人却自信满满地回答：“不必担心，我自有办法。这记号就是宝剑落水之处，等船靠岸后，我只需从这个记号处下水，就能找回我的宝剑。” 船继续前行，江水滔滔，不断流淌。楚人坐在船上，望着那个记号，心中笃定。终于，船靠岸了。楚人立刻站起身来，脱了外衣，按照船上所刻记号，跳进江里寻找宝剑。 他在水中摸索了许久，却一无所获。此时，江面上依旧江水奔腾，那把宝剑早已随着江水的流动不知漂向了何方。楚人满脸沮丧地从水里爬上岸，心中满是不解：明明在记号处，为何找不到宝剑呢？ 周围的人看到他这副模样，纷纷摇头叹息。有一位老者走上前来，语重心长地对他说：“孩子啊，船在江上行驶，宝剑落入水中后并不会随船静止，而是会随着江水流动。你在船上刻记号，只是标记了宝剑落水时船的位置，而非宝剑的实际位置，这样怎么能找到宝剑呢？” 楚人听了老者的话，这才恍然大悟，懊悔自己的愚昧和固执。
